History
Indiana became a state on December 11, 1816 and was the 19th state to join the union. The state was called Indiana because it was thought of as the “land of Indians.” Lots of Indians used to live on the Indiana territory before settlers came and took their land. Indianapolis has been the capital of Indiana ever since 1825. When Indiana was first formed in the 1800s it included land from Illinois, Wisconsin, and some parts of Michigan and Minnesota. After the state became more developed it formed its first major road to cross through the state. It was known as the historic Cumberland or National Road, now known as US Route 40. Indiana has developed its state tremendously ever since it was founded by William Henry Harrison.
Indiana’s state flag was designed by Paul Hadley of Mooresville as part of Indiana’s centennial celebration flag design contest. The torch in the middle of the flag represents liberty and enlightenment. The rays illustrate their far-reaching influence to the state. There are 19 stars on the flag, with the outer stars representing the 13 colonies. The semi-circle of stars stand for the state’s admittion to the Union prior to Indiana. Also, Indiana’s state motto is “The Crossroads of America” because Michigan is to the North, Ohio is to the East, Kentucky is to the South, and Illinois is to the West. In addition, its motto is “The Crossroads of America” because the city of Indianapolis has several major Interstate highways that cross through each other.
Indiana Population
Indiana's population has grown over the years. Ever since the year
2000, Indiana's population has grown to over 0.571 million. When the settlers first moved into Indiana the population was smaller because there weren't many people on Indiana territory. This shows Indiana's population growing and increasing. |
